Selwood Reacts to Emergency in Cumbria December 2009

As a result of the recent heavy rain experienced in the north, Selwood’s branch manager in Workington, Gowan Boyd, received a call from United Utilities informing him that the River Eden water level was at a record high and the Carlisle Waste Water Treatment Works was flooding.

Selwood is United Utilities’ sole supplier of pumps and ancillary equipment and as a result of the phone call three Selwood branches at Workington, Widnes and Leeds reacted immediately. Collectively the branches supplied three S300 12” pumps and two D200 8” pumps along with 1000m of 12” pipework and associated fittings.

One of Selwood’s customers in Carlisle, Waitings Pipeline & Drainage, was called upon to assist in the installation and provided three men with a set of tower lights and a wheeled excavator to unload the lorries and lay out the pipework.

Selwood’s personnel then worked throughout the night as the weather conditions deteriorated and the water level continued to rise to ensure everything was up and running the following day.

With more bad weather expected Selwood set up an emergency response centre housing pumps and hose. Further equipment was then sent out to Keswick WWTW and Cockermouth WWTW as well as a large number of pumping stations that had all been flooded.
